New for 2019 is the CCM Extreme Flex E4.5 Goalie Pads.  There are some very noticeable differences in the CCM Extreme Flex 4.5 compared to past generations.  The most noticeable difference in the new Extreme Flex 4.5 Goalie pads vs. the 2017 Extreme Flex 3.9 is weight.  The 2019 version comes in at 20% lighter then the previous generation E3.5.  Another noticeable new feature of the Extreme Flex 4.9 vs. past generations is the strapping systems.  The 2019 Extreme Flex series has gone to all elastic strapping in the knee and calf areas. This elastic strapping allows the pad to be worn tighter on the goalies leg while allowing the pad to rotate properly when the goalie goes into the butterfly position.  Also new for 2019 is a new toe tie bungee system. For years manufactures like CCM have used a skate lace to connect the toe of the pad to the toe of the skate.  In recent years, after market bungee toe tie products have become very popular because they allow the toe of the pad to stretch from the toe of the skate with an elastic type effect.  This stretching and recoiling improves the recovery process of a goalie but also takes pressure off the goalies ankles, knees and hips because it eliminates the quick stop and jerk process that skate lace has when it runs out of slack.

There are many questions to the difference between the CCM Extreme Flex E4.9 and the E3.5 lines. Basically this comes down to quality of materials. Both are built on the same design patterns, identical in most ways. The big difference is in the materials and how they will last. Both pads will protect the goalie, so it is not like one pad is far superior protection wise then the other. It will come down to use and durability. If you are playing once or twice a week, the E4.5 or the E4.9 will be a good options for you. If you are playing three, four, five times a week, the E4.9 is the better option in this scenario because the materials are better and are capable of taking more abuse. The Extreme Flex 4.5 would work in the second scenario however the pads will break down much quicker. It is important for the goalie to calculate their playing time when considering which pad is best to purchase.

The CCM Extreme Flex series is made for the “hybrid” or athletic style goalie.  Goalies that want movement and flexibility choose this style of pad. The CCM Extreme Flex E4.5 Senior Goalie Leg Pads are a lower mid-level pad. Recommended 1 to 3 uses per week.
