New for 2024 is the Vaughn SLR4 Pro Carbon Chest Protector.  Gone is the Ventus name and now these are SLR4 (no Ventus). Vaughn chest protectors account for 50% of all chest protectors worn in the NHL. The SLR version from Vaughn is the most popular option used by Pro’s and College goalies.  Based off the Epic series of years past but built to modern specs – the SLR4 is Vaughn’s lightest chest and arm protector ever. The Vaughn SLR4 Pro Carbon Senior Chest Protector is built for the coverage style or butterfly style goalies want but with way more mobility than other larger chest protectors in the goalie market today. The SLR4 Pro Carbon chest protector is built with large, squared shoulder floaters that maximize shoulder width in the net.  Although the shoulders are larger, the arms still have a great range of motion compared to other coverage style chest protectors.  Vaughn also added a second layer of protection built underneath the shoulder floaters, this second layer is velcro’d in and can easily be taken out or put back in.  Some goalies love to have this added layer in practice for additional protection and take it out in games for added flexibility.

Vaughn has also kept the adjustable length arms that were on SLR3 Pro Carbon Chest and Arm Protector.  Another feature that was brought back (from the SLR2 Chest & Arm) is the suspender retention straps on the shoulder floaters.  These straps snap across the shoulder floaters and hold the suspender straps in place.  This was a very popular accessory that has been brought back for 2024.

The SLR4 Pro Carbon Chest & Arm protector use high density foams with carbon reinforcement for better coverage and better overall protection.  The arms (forearm and bicep) have added reinforcement.  The forearm and bicep area will continue to have additional wrap around protection that was debuted in the SLR3 series.  The sternum area uses the Pure Composite foam that Vaughn started using in the Velocity V9 series.  The Pure Composite foam is a composite injected foam that is incredibly light and extremely protective,

Differences between the Ventus SLR4 Pro Carbon and the V10 Pro Carbon Chest & Arm Protectors:  The main difference between the SLR4 Pro Carbon Chest Protector and the Velocity V10 is the shoulder area.  The Ventus SLR4 has a larger/wider and more squared off design to the chest protector.  The Velocity V10 Pro Carbon unit tapers to the goalie’s body in a very natural flow of the shoulder area.  In the past we would have said the Velocity line was a more mobile unit, however with some added bulk in the Velocity V10, we feel that the SLR4 is now the more mobile unit with a more squared shoulder profile.
