Vaughn SLR4 Pro Carbon Senior Goalie Leg Pads
New for 2024 is the fourth generation of the popular SLR line from Vaughn. For 2024, Vaughn has dropped the Ventus name, and the pad will now be known as just the SLR4. The Vaughn Ventus SLR4 Pro Carbon line was designed based on the advice of NHL and NCAA goalies and their experiences with the SLR2 & SLR3 gear. These goalies are generally taller and want a stiffer type of pad for increased blocking surface. Goalies such as Darcy Kuemper and Tristian Jarry are great examples of goalies who prefer the new SLR4 pads. (For goalies under six feet tall or goalies that want a softer design, Goalies Plus can custom order this type of construction). A stiffer upper profile with one break below the knee combined with a softer boot break allows these goalies to perform at the top of their game. Vaughn will also be using the Pure Composite core material in the SLR4 Pro Carbon Leg Pads.
Some of the features is the SLR4 Pro Carbon pads are a stiffer section from the bottom of the knee break to the top with more of an L-Shape profile as opposed to an S-Shape profile design. In the shin area of the SLR4 leg pads, the use of the Pure Composite core combined with a carbon fiber layer provide the most explosive rebounds Vaughn has ever produced. Pure composite is also used on the inner edges for a firmer perimeter. The vertical roll (outer roll) is now a triangular design which eliminates weight and increases rebound control. A softer boot flex allows for maximum ankle mobility when the goalie is utilizing various butterfly techniques. The profile of the SLR4 pad has been reduced compared to previous generation SLR pads making this the lightest SLR pad ever. The SLR4 will continue to use the extremely popular Quick Slide on the inner edge surfaces. Quick Slide is considered by many goalies to be the fastest sliding material in the hockey industry today.
The back of the pad has also been changed for 2024. The SLR4 will have a unique strapping system in the calf area. The two elastic calf straps can be positioned inside the calf wrap or on the outside of the calf wrap. This allows the goalie to choose a tight fit option or a loose fit option. Goalies can experiment with different options on the same pad to see if they prefer one over the other. Also new for 2024 is the knee black system. The knee block is now integrated into the core of the pad which allows for greater stability and control in and out of the various butterfly techniques. The integrated knee creates a perfect butterfly seal to the ice and helps eliminate under and over rotation of the pad while in the butterfly technique.
Vaughn has updated its bungee toe ties for 2024. The new bungee toe ties will use a Velcro attachment versus a plastic clip that was used on the previous generation SLR pads. The bungee toe tie system allows the toe of the pad to stretch from the toe of the skate with an elastic type of effect. This stretching and recoiling improves the recovery process of a goalie but also takes pressure off the goalies’ ankles, knees and hips because it eliminates the quick stop and jerk process that skate lace has when it runs out of slack.
